"And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness." (Genesis 1:4)
Before the light came, there was nothing but darkness; "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." "Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light." With the coming of the light God created separation between the light and the darkness. (Genesis 1:2-3) I didn't see it before, but such is the case with the Word of God, we don't 'see the light' until God's Spirit illuminates something that we are now meant to see. What I didn't see was the picture painted so simply here of what happens in the heart when we come to 'see' Christ Jesus. We are 'without form', we are amorphous, inconsistent, like a pile of clay that has all the potential of being what it was designed for, but lacking the design as well as the designer to bring it about. We are 'void'; empty of anything in and of ourselves, hollow, of no substance. We have nothing but 'darkness on the face of the deep'; our surface is darkness and the only thing 'deep' we hold is a vast expanse of empty nothingness. But then...God says 'Let there be light', and he takes the light of Himself and separates us out of our darkness. He 'called you out of darkness into His marvelous light...' (1 Peter 2:9b) He fills us with Himself so that we are no longer 'void'...listen to Paul praying for the Ephesian church, '...that you may be filled with all the fullness of God'. (Ephesians 3:19b) Our form is changed, the lump of clay begins to be molded into the artistry of a master craftsman, 'But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand.' (Isaiah 64:8) God takes the light of His word, the light of His life, the light of His Son and He separates us from every form of darkness. He separates us from the darkness of our sin; from dark thoughts, dark actions, dark motives, dark words, dark behavior, dark places in us where we hide. He separates the light from the darkness. He fills every void area, He brings substance where there was no form. Here at the very beginning, at the outset of His word in Genesis, He paints the portrait of our redemption...it's just beautiful. "Let there be light!!!"
