Purpose

"I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me."  (Psalm 57:2 ESV)

Purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. (Oxford Dictionary)  There are many mixed messages about purpose.  Some would say that we are to be 'purposeless,' that the whole of our existence is to not have any purpose, that the only thing that matters is that we come to recognize, in our great enlightenment, that everything is nothing and life has no real purpose.  Others would purport that we are to 'find our purpose,' that we are on some cosmic journey to seek out our purpose, and once we find it we are to grab hold of it with all that we are and ride it to its completion.  Still others would surmise that the process is our purpose, that it is not some destination we arrive at but rather it is the very path that we are on at this moment, with all of it's twists, turns, and detours.

In the verse from the book of Psalms above we are not told that we do not have a purpose, nor are we told that we are to find our purpose, nor are we informed that the purpose is the process.  We are told that "God fulfills His purpose for me."  Our question should not be, "What is my purpose?" Our question should be "What is God's purpose for me?"  Our question should not be, "Why was I created?" but rather "Why did God create me?  Our question should not be, "Why do I exist?" but more accurately "Why did God bring me into existence?"

We are created beings.  We did not come to be from some sort of cosmic convergence or primordial sludge.  We were created, and every created thing has a creator, and the creator decides the purpose of the thing which he created.  Leonardo da Vinci created the famous painting the "Mona Lisa,"  and as its creator he alone knows the purpose for his painting, he alone knows the purpose for painting her with a mouth that may or may not be smiling.  He created the "Mona Lisa" and his creation has baffled and awed fans and critiques alike.  The Bible says in Genesis 1:27, "So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female he created them."  God 'painted' us in His own image.  Each one of us is a masterpiece that He made, and each of us was made for His purpose, not our own.  As our Creator, He alone knows our purpose, and He alone will fulfill it.  And the circumstances, trials, hardship, destruction, loss--all of it is about His purpose. This path that we are on is a constant ascent against forbearing winds and a host of shadowy enemies. We may set out to do some 'noble' thing, but He may completely change the course and timing of our 'noble' thing into His purposeful God thing.  And all of the places we do not understand, all of the pain that makes no sense, are places where we must trust.

We don't get to decide.  We are to trust and rest in the fact that His purpose for our lives will come to pass.  The painting does not get to decide how it is painted, or what colors will be used, or the type of canvas it will be on. The painting is acted upon by the painter.  In like manner, we must allow ourselves to be acted upon by God, we must yield to Him as Creator, Father, Redeemer, Restorer.  We must trust that the purpose which He designed us for is being accomplished.  We must trust that He will overcome every obstacle, He will stop every enemy, He will provide us with everything that we need as we seek Him, for in seeking Him we will surely find Him, and in finding Him we find the purpose for which we were created.

The Bridge

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
(1 Timothy 2:5)

The Bridge

A bridge crosses over what we hope to touch
It connects a vision to the light above
Not always solid, it can move beneath our feet
the steps we take are marked out and unique

A bridge can be invisible, only seen by very few
It connects souls together and life ensues
A bridge is a walkway from what was to what will be
in the middle we are unsure of what we may see

A bridge is a passage, a way of getting over, getting through
It is a way across a vast expanse, a way to see the view
A bridge covers over water, makes a valley seem small
it's strength is in its subtlety as  most strong things are

A bridge is how I got here, it's why I am yet alive
The wooden structure beneath me was vast and it was wide
I had no means of crossing, no way to get beyond my sin
The cross became the bridge that forever united me to Him

So the next time you cross over what appears to be a normal, ordinary bridge
Take a moment and ponder: He laid His life down so you might live...
